2-year-old Vanessa's grandmother now in on custody battle
DAYTON, Ohio - And then there were three. As in three adults now involved in the much publicized custody battle over baby Vanessa.
Until recently, the dispute only involved Vanessa's biological father, Benjamin Mills Jr. of Dayton, and her adoptive mother, 45-year-old and single mother Stacey Doss, of California.
But Monday, Mills said in a statement released by his attorney that his mother, Rena Jordan, is now willing to raise the little girl.
The 39-year-old Mills maintains he never consented to the adoption of Vanessa, who has been raised since birth by Doss.
Mills' history of domestic violence is an issue in his challenge to Vanessa's adoption.
Mills has three children with Andrea Conley, 31, who lives in Riverside and supports Doss' efforts to finalize the adoption.
Jordan has had legal custody two of his children with Conley since 2008, according to the statement released by Legal Aid of Western Ohio attorney Elizabeth Gorman, who represents Mills.
The statement, obtained by our partners at the Dayton Daily News, also quotes Cristy Oakes, who represents Jordan. "At this time, Ms. Jordan is ready, willing and able to take custody of her granddaughter," Oakes said. "She wants to raise her granddaughter with her two siblings in a loving, caring environment."
Doss said she would be happy to have Vanessa know her biological siblings, but said she will fight for her daughter up to the U.S. Supreme Court if she has to.
