Ferguson gets 65 years for abusing her adopted kids
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (AP) -- A southwest Ohio woman has been sentenced to 65 years in prison for abusing her five adopted children.
Vonda Ferguson was sentenced today in Clark County Common Pleas Court in Springfield on 20 counts of child endangering, two counts of rape and five counts each of permitting child abuse and felonious assault.
Authorities say 46-year-old Ferguson used extreme forms of punishment between 2000 and 2004, including hitting the children with hammers and belts until they bled and burning them with irons.
Ferguson denied the charges and testified that she used only mild corporal punishment.
Her husband, James Ferguson, was convicted on similar charges last year and received the same sentence.
Authorities removed the children from the Fergusons' home in 2004.
