ATHENS, Ohio - The Delta Tau Delta fraternity at Ohio University has pleaded not guilty to one criminal count of hazing after a student spent last Thursday night in the hospital.

Police say several students were hurt during an initiation at the fraternity's house.

One 18 year old student, freshman Michael Pristera, sustained broken bones, bruises in the shape of a hand, and a chipped tooth stemming from the alleged hazing.

If convicted they could face a fine of $2,000. The school has launched its own investigation.

What others are saying

  • thanks
Thankyou for letting us know what the Delta Tau Delta active body thinks of this, while most likely trying to cover their big mistake, hope you men learned that Hazing doesn't pay.
  • Re: Be annoyed.
While it is true that many students go to the hospital from OU, they do not tell nurses and police officers that they were hazed. In this case, more than one individual has done just that according to reports. You seem very defensive of Greek Life in your post and it is important to remember that all of Greek Life is not under investigation here, just this one event that authorities have been alerted to. That being said, you may find it interesting to read responses online to the article in The Post. Students from other fraternities have posted that they are glad that it wasn't their fraternity that got caught. Believe me, I KNOW that not all fraternities participate in this type of behavior, however it is important not to dismiss a accusation from students.

I am also curious to know what you are outraged by. A student reported that they were injured at an event. Would you prefer that authorities did not investigate the complaint? Are you upset that a student reported being hazed? Unless you are a member of the Delt fraternity, I doubt you could know for sure if the accusations are true or not, based solely on the secrecy that surrounds such events. I hope that you will explain your view point!
  • The pledge fell down the huge hill known as Jefferson Hill that leads to his dorm room. I did last year and sustained similar injuries but the police didn't question if I had been hazed. I have been to the Delt house countless times and these men are awesome people. There have been countless accusations to numerous fraternity houses on campus and numerous NON-GREEK and greek individuals that go to the hospital on a weekly basis without a question of hazing. Maybe Ohio University should launch investigations of every individual that enters the hospital on the weekend. This is outrageous.
