Grand jury drops indictment against pair for beating death of 2-year-old
DAYTON, Ohio - A grand jury has declined to indict a mother and her boyfriend on charges related to the beating death of a 2-year-old boy.
Denise Stinson and Mark Newberry were being held in a Montgomery County Jail after prosecutors approved charges on the couple regarding the death of Malechi Wilson. Police say Wilson died on June 9 from blunt force trauma to the abdomen.
The Montgomery County coroner said Malechi's injuries were so bad that some of his organs ruptured, and that he likely "suffered for hours." Stinson, the boy's biological mother, and Newberry were both taken into custody shortly after Malechi's death, but were released when prosecutors did not approved the first round of charges against the pair.
According to police, the 23-year-old Stinson and the 45-year-old Newberry have not cooperated with the official investigation at any point. Newberry was not Malechi's biological father, but the pair's 10-month-old child has been placed into foster care.
