FLU UPDATE: Vaccines being administered as quickly as received
DAYTON, Ohio -- Sick kids are flooding into emergency rooms around the area as parents - and now government officials - are concerned with the H1N1 virus.
Children's Medical Center in Dayton says it is seeing around 400 children a day in its emergency room and urgent cares.
On Wednesday, the Dayton City Commission asked Jim Gross, the director of Public Health for Dayton and Montgomery, about the availability of the vaccine. Gross told the city that it's a "little bit of a crisis right now" with regards to the production of the vaccine.
Gross said the availability of the vaccine is dependent upon the Ohio Department of Public Health. He said the vaccine is being administered as quickly as it is received, and that at-risk portions of the population - namely women who are pregnant, elderly, and children - are prioritized.
Meanwhile, school kids began getting the H1N1 vaccine on Tuesday. Some 650 kids at Incarnation School in Centerville were vaccinated yesterday while St. Rita's School in Dayton also had students lining up for the vaccine.
City officials are worried, however, because Dayton Public Schools has not received any doses of the vaccine as of yet.
Around 2100 in Clark County got their H1N1 vaccine at the Clark County Fairgrounds while another 1300 got doses against the seasonal flu. Montgomery County also announced Tuesday plans for a special flu clinic for children and pregnant women at Hara Arena on Thursday.
