Higgins Station Shooter Gets 89 to Life
DAYTON, Ohio - A man convicted of shooting six people and killing one at the Higgins Station bar last December has been sentenced to 89 years to life in prison.
Rodney Young was convicted on August 20 of all 17 felony counts brought against him. The charges included one count of murder, 12 counts of felonious assault, one count of illegal possession of a firearm in a liquor permit premises, one count of carrying a concealed weapon, and two counts of possessing a weapon after a felony conviction.
In 16 of the 17 cases, Young was convicted of firearms specifications, adding three years to each sentence.
Prosecutors said that the 29-year-old Young fired into a group of people on December 12 while inside the bar at 420 East Main Street in Trotwood. Young shot six people, including 21-year-old David Watson of Dayton, who was shot in the back as he tried to flee. Watson collapsed in the bar parking lot and was later pronounced dead at an area hospital.
Following the shooting, Young was a subject of a federal manhunt for violating his parole. He was arrested on December 19 when U.S. marshals and local authorities kicked down the door of his motel room in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky.
Young's sentence includes 48 years for the felonious assault counts, 36 years for the firearms specifications on those counts, and five years for the counts of being a felon in possession of a weapon, adding up to 71 years before Young would start serving his 18-to-life sentence for the murder conviction and the firearms specifications.
