Cincinnati Cheetah Sets Record for Fastest Land Animal
CINCINNATI (AP) - The Cincinnati Zoo says one of its cheetahs has become the speediest land mammal on record - twice.
Zoo officials say an 8-year-old female cheetah named Sarah ran 100 meters in 6.16 seconds yesterday, breaking the old record of 6.19 seconds set in 2001 by a cheetah living in South Africa.
Later, Sarah ran the course again and finished in an even faster 6.13 seconds.
The cat was clocked at the zoo's Regional Cheetah Breeding Facility in southwest Ohio's Clermont County. The Road Running Technical Council of USA Track & Field certified the course.
The fastest human to run the 100 meters is a relative slowpoke compared to Sarah's 6.13 seconds. In August, Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt set the record at 9.58 seconds.
