Tipp City Native Reaches 34th State on Cross-Country Bike Trip
SOMEWHERE OUT WEST, U.S. - Phil Nagle isn't always sure what state he's in, and he's not always able to glimpse the scenery, but he knows that sometime Tuesday, he entered his 34th state since embarking on a remarkable trip.
The Tipp City native set out on his bicycle July 20 in an attempt to cycle through all of the lower 48 states in 48 days to raise money for charity.
The University of Cincinnati graduate says he's about three days behind schedule, but he hopes to make them up as he turns to head back east. He said traveling west into the head winds has slowed him some, but he plans on reaching Washington on Thursday and after that should be assisted by the winds heading back to Ohio.
Nagle has ridden an average of nearly 200 miles a day, and has reached an elevation of 10,000 feet three times on the trip.
His goal was to return by Labor Day, meaning he'll have to average more than 200 miles per day for the remainder of the trip to reach his goal.
