Fatal Collision in the Skies Over Darke County
ARCANUM, Ohio -- One man is dead and another injured after a mid-air collision in Darke County.
Police say a powered parachute flown by 56-year-old Terry Price of Arcanum collided with an ultralight plane piloted by 66-year-old Thomas Jackson of Arcanum just before 9 p.m. Monday night over Arcanum Ithaca Road and Grubbs Rex Road in Darke County. The damage both aircrafts sustained in the air caused them to crash to the ground.
Price was pronounced dead at the scene. Jackson was flown to Miami Valley Hospital for treatment. Officers say both men were wearing safety gear at the time of the crash.
One person who knew Terry Price and Thomas Jackson says they were the best of friends. They took to the skies earlier in the day to fly over the grandstands at the Darke County Fair. Apparently both pilots were in the process of landing when this tragic accident occurred.
The Federal Aviation Administration is assisting the Darke County Sheriff's Office and the Darke County Coroner with the investigation.
What others are saying
- Terrible Lost of a Good FriendI have known Terry and his family over 12 years. Terry and his crew built my barn and remodeled my house in the late 1990's. I worked with him several Labor Day weekends at his food concession at Chillicothe during the Harley Motorcycle Rodeo. Got to know Carol and the family during the years as they operated food and lemonade stands at various county fairs.
A good man is gone. My heart is broken and pray for the family of Terry Price. I regret the loss of a good friend and know he will be missed by many.
"The Good die young"
Bill - sad accidentboth tom and terry are very genuine, wonderful people. my heart goes out to the Price family. may God be with you through this hard time. i hope that tom recovers quickly from his injuries.
- We were there, somewhereI learned to fly PPCs from Tom. I was there right before, during, or after the crash on my motorcycle. I had seen the PPC then lost it. I turned east on Grubbs-Rex and they must have crashed West of me. I never saw them.
