State Cuts Funding, Dayton Schools Cut Program And Jobs
DAYTON, Ohio -- Officials with Dayton Public Schools announced yesterday, July 2, that 13 staffers were eliminated this week because the state will no longer provide funding for the district's Adult Basic and Literacy Education program.
The district lost $729,000 in funding, which means the 400 or so people who use the service will have to search for help elsewhere. The program focused on teaching adults things like life skills, English as a second language, and preparing for a GED exam.
Officials say there are still similar programs at Kettering schools, Sinclair Community College, Miami Valley Career Technology Center, and Miami Valley Literacy Council -- It's not clear why DPS was cut from the list of programs the state funds.
