McCook Residents Want Testing For Toxic Gases
DAYTON, Ohio -- Residents of the McCook Field neighborhood are asking the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to test the air of homes affected by one of the most complex hazardous-waste sites in the nation -- they've even created a YouTube video to help spread information.
The neighborhood, recently declared a national Superfund site by the EPA, is located around the Behr Dayton Thermal plant, 1600 Webster Street, which produces vehicle air conditioning and cooling systems. The area is plagued by the Behr VOC Plume, a cloud of underground toxic gases that has contaminated groundwater and released hazardous chemicals into the air.
The plume contains dangerously high levels of trichloroethylene (TCE), a toxic gas linked with cancer and other health problems.
Some testing has been done in the area already, but residents say many homes need tested again, and some need tested for the first time.
The plant was owned by Chrysler until it was sold in May 2002. While Chrysler has paid for the installation of systems designed to filter the air in several homes, they have denied responsibility for a large portion of the contaminated area.
