Air and Space Museum Sculpture Becomes Melted Cheese
WAPAKONETA, Ohio - As workers at the Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum discovered Monday morning, cheese tends to melt in warmer temperatures.
A cheddar cheese sculpture of an astronaut softened and slipped off of its base after the air conditioning automatically shut off at the museum Sunday night into Monday morning. The sculpture, part of the display honoring the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11's successful moon landing and moon walk, was made from nearly a ton of cheese.
Artist Sarah Kauffman spent nearly 59 hours carving the spaceman on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday as part of the weekend festivities at the museum.
The warmer temperatures caused damage to the artwork, leaving hundreds of visitors to the museum on Monday disappointed.
