Two More Area Businesses Lay Off Workers
DAYTON, Ohio - Two more companies will be laying off workers in the Dayton area, adding to the unemployment total for the city and county.
Cooper Tire announced Wednesday that they will be shifting their plant operations to Franklin, Indiana, and will lay off 59 employees by the end of August. The company announced the closing of the Moraine plant of Dryden Road in December of 2007, but had not officially decided on a closing date until this month.
Meanwhile, two months after announcing that they would leave the safety components business, Delphi informed the state government that they will close its Vandalia plant and permanently lay off 116 workers at the plant.
In a letter to the Ohio Department of job and Family Services, the company said the layoffs would not affect those that work at the thermal products section of the plant, also located in Vandalia.
The two announcements only add to those made by General Motors, Iams, and NCR in the past six months with regards to moving or closing operations in the Miami Valley. GM closed its Moraine plant in December, Iams announced the move if its headquarters from Vandalia to Mason in May, and NCR decided to move its operations to Atlanta two weeks ago.
