Teen Who Tried To Save Friends Dies
TROTWOOD, Ohio -- An 18-year-old man who jumped into a pool trying to save his friends has died.
Renier Walker died last night at Miami Valley Hospital.
He is being called a hero because he tried to save his friends despite not being able to swim.
The pool at a private residence near Creekview Drive and Sycamore Woods Boulevard belongs to 17-year-old Lauren Rutledge's uncle, who was not at home.
Rutledge, her boyfriend Felix Banks, 20, and their friend Walker decided "to hang out on the patio by the pool. They weren't planning to swim."
At some point, Rutledge reportedly got into the shallow end to cool off, and Banks got in later, slipped to the deep end and began flailing as he repeatedly sank.
Rutledge went in to rescue him.
Seeing Rutledge and Banks struggling, Walker jumped in, but was quickly in trouble himself.
Eventually, Rutledge was able to drag Banks to steps at the pool's edge. She performed stomach and chest compressions until he was breathing.
Rutledge called 911 while she and Banks worked to revive Walker.
Police said they were called shortly after 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
