DAYTON, Ohio -- Tax Day has come and gone, and so have the Tea Party's in Dayton and around the country.

Now organizers and attendees wait to see if they bring about any change in current policy.

The local event, protesting what they claim is "runaway government spending," attracted thousands to Court House Square in downtown Dayton last night. Organizers and police officers estimated the crowd at approximately 8,000 people, making the Tea Party the largest in Ohio and one of the largest in the country.

Many in the crowd carried signs protesting taxes and government bailouts.

Organizers said the rally was nonpartisan, though many signs protested the Obama administration and featured as closing speaker state representative Seth Morgan, a Republican.

The organizers hope to pressure Congress to repeal the federal stimulus package, draw attention to the need for fiscal restraint, support for the free market and small business, and respect for the Constitution.

Other Tea Party's were held around Ohio, including one in Springfield.

What others are saying

  • Economics
The trillions of dollars weren't spent, they were loaned. The banks are required to pay the gov't (us) back. There may even be interest attached, so the gov't (us again) would actually be profitting from the deal. And most Americans can't even balance their own budget, so how do you think they know how to allocate tax dollars? It's when people are forced to make big decisions on short timescales that mistakes are made. Some people are trying to make things better, mistakes or not, but they get flamed by the people they are trying to help. Point is, there are too many people complaining about things they don't know about, or don't have the whole story. People are only told half of the stories (either the Left side or the Right side), and people seem to just take things at face value. People need to stop being sheep and parrots.

  • Economics reply
It doesn't take an advanced degree in economics to figure out that trillions of dollars in spending is unsustainable.
  • Tea Party
I signed up via email to go, but couldn't make it, but wish I had. I agree that we all need to be more educated about our govt. and how it collects and spends our money. I think if every tax payer asked this of themself, 'if this was my money and my spending decision, what would I do?" they would make different choices than our govt. has made, but the abjecation of the decision to the govt. via elections should not impede questioning how is my hard earned money being used and can I use it better to benefit me, since it is MY money.
  • Economics
Was anyone skilled in economics at the event? Did anyone at the event have any possible ideas that are better? Does anyone know the reasons why these policies were made? Maybe people should start educating themselves and try to fix the problem instead of just complaining about the people who are trying to fix the problem. At least some tea manufacturers were stimulated.
  • Headcount
Yea 7,000 RSVP'd, but from where I was standing it was probably around 2,000.

I think the weather had an adverse affect.
  • Headcount
What was the actual turnout? Yesterday's news said that bigger cities had 200 to 2000 people at their tea parties. We had over 7000 RSVP before the event, but I have not heard a final tally. So was Dayton the largest?
  • Headline Title?
    Lots Of Rhetoric???
I guess it's only a Legitimate matter when the Media says it is... Calling the Tea Party rhetoric says alot,,,does that go for the Emcee of the event?
