Snowfall More Than Anticipated Throughout Miami Valley
DAYTON, Ohio - Those who went to bed early Sunday night in the Miami Valley might have woken up to a bit more snow accumulation than they might have expected after a somewhat "surprise" snowfall hit the region.
Though most areas received only about an inch of snow, many of the roadways throughout the valley turned dangerous as the accumulation covered icy conditions beneath. Police and fire crews worked throughout the night and into the morning responding to accident reports, including a multi-vehicle crash on I-75 near the Third Street exit.
Accidents were also reported at the intersection of I-75 and I-675, as well as along US-35, which was described by one dispatcher on a scanner as "a sheet of ice." Wayne Avenue and Smithville Road were also common trouble spots.
The Ohio Department of Transportation was prepared for the winter weather, with 12 crews spreading salt and managing roadways on state routes, according to Transportation Manager Ed Stebbins. Montgomery County had all 21 of their trucks out as well Sunday night and early Monday morning.
Meanwhile Dayton International Airport had crews working hard to clear the runways and de-ice planes in preparation for the morning batch of departures and arrivals.
The snow was a result of a bit of "lake effect," bringing more snow than expected into the region. The National Weather Service in Wilmington had called for less than an inch of accumulation, but a change in the system brought a bit more snow.
More snow and colder temperatures are in the forecast for Monday night as well, leading to a week where highs are not expected to get about 20-25 degrees.
