Strickland In Town For GM Update
DAYTON, Ohio -- Hundreds of jobs at General Motors Moraine Truck and Bus Assembly plant will disappear in two months, but the people who are trying to help the area survive say they are not giving up.
Members of the Regional Response Task Force are meeting with Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland today o help plot out a strategy after production ends at Moraine's GM plant.
GM said it will stop production at the plant on December 23.
Members of the response task force are updating Gov. Strickland on the progress made in cushioning the blow of the plant closing.
Hundreds of GM workers are being urged to take advantage of Montgomery County's Career Transition Center. The Center is designed help them find new jobs and make sure they have the right skills for those jobs. Employees can use the resources at the center for free.
The Regional Response Task Force is made up of 40 local legislative and community leaders as well as elected officials.
Montgomery County Commissioner Judy Dodge is one of the task force leaders. She is urging workers to move forward and try to be as optimistic as possible.
"We want to do anything to move in a confident way. There are jobs out there," said Dodge. "You can find them; just get in here into the Transition Center."
Some of the task force members are urging workers and local leaders to focus Dayton on moving into Higher Technology sectors.
The meeting with Strickland began at 11:30 a.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Dayton
