Strickland; Let's Make a Deal
03/05/2008 16:18:27
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Gov. Ted Strickland says he would be willing to surrender his status as a so-called superdelegate to the Democratic convention in future elections if it helps rid the nominating process of caucus meetings.
Strickland told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he would be happy to strip superdelegates from the convention. The superdelegates are not bound by voters' preferences when backing a candidate.
Strickland has endorsed Hillary Rodham Clinton, the winner of Ohio's primary on Tuesday.
Long a critic of caucuses, the governor says they leave too many people out. He says people who can't be at a caucus meeting at a set time include soldiers overseas on active duty, second shift workers and those in the hospital.
Strickland wants to replace caucuses with a primary election-only system nationwide.
