County Says No To Foster Kids Computer System

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Cuyahoga County officials are refusing to join a new statewide computer system for tracking abused and neglected foster children because of continued technical problems. The state has ordered the county to sign onto the program by June 23rd.
In a letter to Governor Strickland, county commissioners say they believe the program could place children at risk due to severe glitches.
The $92 million Statewide Automated Child Welfare Information System is designed to collect data on child abuse and neglect cases. It replaces independent county-by-county databases.
Some counties have abandoned the flawed system for spreadsheets to track cases. Officials cite computer glitches that make the system inaccessible, and caseworkers have struggled with incomplete records and a data backlog.
