Egg Farm Turns Manure Into Money

06/22/2008 14:44:34

HARTFORD, Ohio -- The state's largest egg producer has used its fix for serial health violations as a way to make money.

Ohio Fresh Eggs has spent $51 million to address complains about odor, manure runoff and pest problems.

Among the upgrades, a conveyor belt now takes chicken manure away from barns and eventually to farmers' fields. A farm manager says he used to have to beg folks to take the chicken waste, but now they cannot process enough.

Ohio Fresh Eggs took over the plant from Buckeye Egg Farm in 2003.

Despite the improvements, the company has received 57 warnings and notices from the state, some as recently as April. State
inspectors aren't ready to call the farm completely fixed and says the central Ohio plant still has work to do.
