NEW CARLISLE, Ohio A family escaped a burning house on Gailwood Street in New Carlisle around 10:30 p.m. Thursday.
All the occupants were waiting outside when the New Carlisle fire department arrived fifteen minutes later. Firefighters were able to rescue 11 puppies from the blaze. One woman was taken by ambulance to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
"Most people have animals," said firefighter Brian Doak, who rescued the puppies, adding that he found them huddled and crying in a back room in the house. "Animals are part of the family and we try to save them, too. We were lucky tonight, we saved them all."
The blaze caused significant smoke damage to the home.
"(It) appeared to have begun in the bedroom of the residence," said Rick Ritter, operations chief for the New Carlisle Fire Department.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but Ritter said it appeared to be accidental. An investigation is ongoing.
