Another Snow Day
Even before the National Weather Service warned that more than 10 inches of new snow was a possibility for Tuesday, Congressional Committees were postponing hearings set for Tuesday on Capitol Hill, as lawmakers scrambled to return to D.C. airports hard hit by last weekend's bad weather.
Off the Hill, other events were being scratched as well, like a news conference originally set for today with the Secretary of Transportation and American Idol winner Jordin Sparks on texting while driving.
Damn. That was one I really wanted to cover. Okay, maybe not.
Only two Senators showed up at the Capitol on Monday for an abbreviated session of the Senate, as Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) delayed two scheduled votes until Tuesday.
Reid noted the difficult travel conditions in and around Washington, saying his own return from Nevada had been "very, very difficult."
The Majority Leader made no mention of legislative efforts on jobs legislation, which Democrats had hoped to conclude this week, as there is still no deal among Democrats on how to proceed.
While the Senate was still going ahead with plans for votes on Tuesday, the House scrapped its schedule of votes set for Tuesday evening.
"We remain focused on completing our work for the week," said House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD), who said he would "asses the state of the weather tomorrow."
On Friday, lawmakers start a ten day break known as the President's Day Recess.
In other words, not much work may get done before Congress returns the week of February 22.
As for my snow update, my parents still don't have power, the snow plow finally hit my neighborhood, and my train is running today.
We'll see if I can actually make it to the Capitol.
