The Battle For Congress
Democrats look at the polls right now and dream of a 60 seat majority in the US Senate, and frankly, if election day was this weekend, they might get there.
Every two years there are a handful of incumbents who lose their seats, but were never really on the radar as someone that was in trouble.
I'm sure we will get one of those this year. But for Republicans, the problem is a number of their incumbents - especially in the Senate - have been on the hot seat for awhile.
Among those in trouble, the Senate Republican Leader, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY.) Democrats are throwing in extra money for advertising in the Bluegrass State, with polls showing that race close.
As of right now, Democrats seem likely to pick up five seats no matter what. Virginia, New Mexico, Colorado, New Hampshire and Alaska (the seat of Sen. Ted Stevens, now on trial in a federal court in DC.)
From there, Democrats hope to gain even more, with Minnesota, Oregon and North Carolina all possible victories. In Minnesota, the Democrat is comedian Al Franken, who has his share of flaws. But it hasn't stopped him from taking the lead over Sen. Norm Coleman.
In North Carolina, Democrats have been hammering on Sen. Elizabeth Dole for hardly going back to the Tar Heel State. She has trailed in recent polls in a state where Barack Obama has been running strong.
Other seats that might slip out of the Republican orbit include Senate seats in Maine, Georgia and even Mississippi, which would have been a pipe dream a year ago.
If you are counting and keeping score at home - that is a dozen seats in all that Democrats are licking their chops about. RIght now Democrats have 49 - add in 12 - and you are over the magic number of sixty.
Win that many, and the Dems can toss Sen. Joe Lieberman onto the legislative scrap heap and start dreaming of how they can keep 60 Senators together to block any filibusters.
Over in the House, right now the forecast would also be for a strong Democratic pickup. Obviously that can all change in the final 26 days of this race, depending on what happens between Obama and McCain.
But right now, the trend is most certainly towards the Democrats.
The last time that Democrats held the White House and majorities in both the House and Senate was after the 1992 elections when Bill Clinton was elected. They lost that advantage two years later when Newt Gingrich engineered the Contract With America.
26 days to go, and there is a lot at stake.
