Bailout Bill Now Law

It didn't take long after the House voted 263-171 for President Bush to sign into law the massive $700 billion Wall Street bailout bill, as Congressional leaders twisted enough arms to get the bill through, four days after a stunning initial defeat.

Democrats voted 172-63 in favor of the bill. Republicans went 91 to 108 against.

In all, 58 more lawmakers voted for the measure than on Monday, with 32 of those votes coming from the Democrats and 26 from the GOP.

Congressional leaders say both presidential candidates, along with President Bush did their part to lobby reluctant lawmakers.

Barack Obama will probably get the better PR, as Democrats who switched to yes were saying his name over and over in a series of interviews and news conferences today.

John McCain only got limited mention by comparison.

It ended two weeks of high stakes activity by the Bush Administration and the Legislative Branch, as both strained to find a deal that could make it through the Congress quickly.

Check back later for the vote breakdown by state and more.
