You Can't Make It Up

Just a few days ago, I was worried about what Bill and Hillary Clinton would say at the Democratic Convention and now I've got to be concerned with reporting on the pregnancy of the 17-year old daughter of GOP running mate Sarah Palin.

A night earlier, my ever vigilant mother had sent me the internet warning that people were actually alleging that Gov. Palin had faked a pregnancy in order to cover up her daughter giving birth.

I relate this only because it seems so absurd, and as tired as I was after 10 days on the road, my internal garbage detector instinctively knew that one couldn't be true.

But it never really registered that maybe 17 year old Bristol Palin could be pregnant right now, have that revealed during the Republican Convention, the Republican Convention where her mom is being nominated for Vice President.

"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family," said parents Sarah and Todd Palin in a written statement.

I don't remember my best broadcast journalism professor in college telling me about situations like this.

It's only been a couple of days since she was nominated, and we get something like this. Soon someone is going to talk about what shoe is going to drop next.

"It's too bad Saturday Night Live hasn't started their new season yet," said one of my colleagues.

"You could have a Juno type skit and set it in Juneau, Alaska," he chuckled as we tried to figure out "what's next" in the Presidential race.

Then there was another flash on the Associated Press wire late in the day.

"ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, McCain's running mate, hires lawyer for Troopergate investigation," read the news bulletin.

"I told you," I overheard another reporter say, "she's not going to be around next week."

I won't go that far, but so far this GOP convention has taken some odd turns. We'll see if Republicans can get things back on track on Tuesday.

You just can't make this stuff up.
