An Odd Note From the GOP - Update

It's clear that losing night number one of their convention has put the squeeze on GOP organizers, as they try to figure out who is going to speak when in the final three days of the Republican National Convention.

As I have said before, my eleven major political conventions have repeatedly demonstrated that Republicans are far better at organizing these events than Democrats, who for some reason are often in a perpetual state of disorganization on a variety of fronts.

But this day two of the GOP convention got off to an odd start, as it took almost the whole morning for the McCain campaign to give out the basics of Tuesday night's session.

For whatever reason, Rudi Giuliani's keynote address has been spiked for tonight, as the top speeches in prime time will be given by former Sen. Fred Thompson and Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman.

Lieberman's speech is entitled, "The Original Maverick," while Thompson gives, "The Courage and Service of John McCain."

The exact details of this evening were still not clear at lunch time, as the GOP Convention website says "CHECK BACK FOR DETAILS," on tonight's lineup.

I had a GOP press secretary from Congress email me to try to find out what was going on in his party's convention.

"Have they given you all any updates on the time and the program tonight yet? Information over here is not moving in real time, I'm afraid."

That means delegates and officials from one of the key states at this convention had no real idea what to tell their people about Tuesday's schedule.

Like I said, that is not like the Republican organizers that I know.

As for President Bush, he will speak to the convention via satellite from the White House. His Monday night speech was cancelled due to Hurricane Gustav.

The details of tonight were laid out in a conference call. McCain Campaign Manager Rick Davis acknowledged that GOP officials are having a hard time determining what speeches should be salvaged from Monday and then shoehorned into the schedule today, Wednesday and Thursday.
