A Wolf In The GOP Convention
That "in between" is someone who used to be a Republican, but now runs under the banner of the Libertarian Party, as former Rep. Bob Barr is casing the joint here, looking for votes of disaffected Republicans.
"I'm reaching an awful lot of people that aren't buying into the story that the Republican Party is a true conservative party anymore," Barr told me as he ran around Radio Row, doing interviews with anyone wielding a microphone or a pen.
Barr made sure he attended a big rally of Ron Paul supporters as well, one possible source of supporters in November.
"I spoke with hundreds of folks at the Ron Paul event, who were very excited not about John McCain, but the Libertarian message and my candidacy," said Barr.
Right now, Barr is on the ballot in 41 of the 50 states. He hopes to be on in all 50 on election day, but one or two could still elude his grasp.
While you don't find many people real worried about him, there is always the Ralph Nader concern for Republicans.
Remember how Nader took some votes out of Al Gore in a number of states in 2000, but most importantly in Florida, where the election took over a month to finally be finished.
A good showing by Barr in a state like Georgia (his home state) could make the difference in a close race between Barack Obama and John McCain.
Most experts don't think Barr will make a difference in November, but Barr isn't listening, one reason he's running from interview to interview to interview.
"Let's talk again before the week is over."
