The Clintons Join The Bandwagon

By the time Bill Clinton's speech to the Democratic Convention ended, his repeated full throated endorsements of Barack Obama were becoming so repetitive that I began to wonder if he was playing a trick on us.

But no, it was no political trick by the former President, just his usual way of doing everything in a slightly larger than life context.

His speech came after several days of renewed political intrigue, as the House of Clinton seemed to be ready to tamper with Camelot and the House of Obama.

But then the Clintons raced into help bury the rumors of a Clinton-Obama rift, while raising new questions about their relations with Obama.

For example, where the heck was all this a couple of months ago?

Hillary Clinton further ground down her molars on Wednesday when she stood before her delegates and gave them the news that she was releasing them - in other words - they could vote for Obama when the roll was called.

"I knew she was going to, we all knew that. But just hearing it, I had tears in my eyes," said Clinton delegate Katherine Larkin of Florida.

Larkin stuck with Clinton, while over 50 other Hillary supporters from the Sunshine State made the break and voted with Obama.

As the roll call of the states got underway, it occurred to me that this was the first time in ten conventions that I have covered, that the roll call might have an unexpected result.

Usually, it's completely ceremonial, and the parties move the states around so that some important place like Ohio can put the candidate over the top.

But this time, it wasn't clear where this was going, and the sniping between Team Clinton and Team Obama was complicating an easy solution.

Suddenly, the pick was transferred to Illinois, and I figured that meant Obama's home state was going to put him over the top. But then they yielded to New York.

That's when Hillary came down onto the convention floor and they handed her the microphone.

"Let's declare together in one voice right here, right now, that Barack Obama is our candidate," Clinton said to great cheers.

Suddenly, as she moved to award Obama the nomination by acclimation, Hillary was once more showing her supportive side for Obama.

Several months back, she might have walked over, grabbed him and banged him off the cement if possible.

But after her big time speech Tuesday night, Hillary was back on Wednesday, paving the way for the end of the Democratic nomination fight.

A few hours later, it was Bill soaking up the huge cheers, which went on for over three minutes before he could more than a word or two in edgewise.

NO matter how much they protest, the Democrats love Bubba.

And now Hill and Bill are on the Obama Bandwagon.
