Saturday In Springfield, Illinois

It looks like the first real event with Barack Obama and his still-unnamed will be at the State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois, which is where Obama announced his bid for the White House in early 2007.

That leaked out through the day on Tuesday, setting out much of the timing that will occur in coming hours for Team Obama.

At this writing, we are no closer to actually knowing "who" the choice is going to be, though we seem to be wrestling with the same four names that have been out there for awhile:

Senators Evan Bayh and Joe Biden, along with Governors Tim Kaine of Virginia and Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas.

The Senators give Obama some heft on foreign policy issues. The Governors do not.

As I am typing this, an email just popped into the ole Dupree Inbox from the one candidate that some people still think has an outside shot at being the Obama VP choice - Hillary Clinton.

On Thursday, Clinton will be campaigning for Obama down in South Florida.

So far, I haven't seen an Obama schedule, but I don't think the two of them will be working together. But we'll see.

Several blogs have mentioned in recent days that Republicans are talking up Clinton. I really think she was knocked out of the running a long time ago, but who knows. There are too many negatives to that choice it seems.

"Obama's goal in choosing a vice president seems to be to avoid controversy," wrote former Bill Clinton strategist (and now Clinton hater) Dick Morris in his latest column. "Picking an Evan Bayh or a Tim Kaine would be a safe choice."

I would have to agree with that on Bayh, but Kaine would probably draw a lot of questions about the Democratic ticket's foreign policy experience, which wouldn't be much.

Then again, Bill Clinton didn't have much experience with foreign policy as Governor of Arkansas. Neither did George W. Bush as Governor of Texas, and I can keep running down a list of those type of candidates who won the White House.

I wouldn't really qualify Joe Biden as "safe," mainly because he likes to talk. A lot. And that can get you into trouble.

Remember, Biden at one point described Obama as "the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean."

Biden didn't get abused too badly for that because the press knew he wasn't going to win the nomination. We all just hoped the Delaware Senator would go quietly.

One thing most people probably don't know about Biden is that he takes the train from Wilmington, Delaware to Washington, D.C. every day. That is his two hour commute on Amtrak.

So does the other Senator from Delaware, Democrat Tom Carper.

I often run into Sen. Carper as I'm walking out of Union Station after arriving on my train from the DC suburbs.

Sen. Carper walks the three blocks or so to his office building.

Sen. Biden waits for a staffer to drive over and pick him up.

You make the call on that.

We'll know later this week whether Biden is going to get a lot more rides this year.
