Tea Party's "Astroturf"? Not After Saturday!
I know a lot of people in the music industry that would kill to have concert turnout the size of the crowd that invaded Voice Of America park in West Chester for the "Voice Of America Freedom Rally on Saturday.
The Butler County Sheriff estimated that 18-thousand people were on hand to hear speakers speak their minds on issues ranging from the military actions in Iraq and Afghanistan, to bailouts, the national debt and, of course, health care reform. Nearby the park, a crowd of 20 presented their counter-views.
I defy anyone to call this rally "not legitimate". No, these are people who have what they feel are legitimate differences with those in power in Washington. (Not just President Obama, but with Nancy Pelosi (who was invited, but did not attend), Harry Reid, and sometimes even with both aisles of Congress). People are getting fed up with the status quo...and their protests are finally getting the attention of those in D.C.
The Town Hall Forum that was held gave area citizens an opportunity to question area legislators about the issues. It was a lively discussion, and speakers such as Dayton Congressman Mike Turner, House Minority Leader John Boehner, Representative Jean Schmidt and GOP gubernatorial candidate John Kasich were all well received. At the same time, though it's fair to note that not every answer each gave to questions resonated 100% approval from the crowd. Some of the answers given brought some jeers and shouts from the crowd.
This tells me at least those in attendance were paying attention to what was said. Good. We need more of this.
If I recall my nomenclature correctly, this is called "political community activism".
Activists, you see, can come from both sides of the political fence. And, what's good for the goose, can be good for the gander, too.
What others are saying
- Zakur - You're In DenialJust like so many in your party today (Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid to name a few), you are in total denial of the fact that a plurality and possibly now (thanks to our President) a majority of people disagree with the direction you guys want to take the country.
Barack Obama was not elected because he is black. He was pushed over the top by independent voters who believed him to be a centrist candidate, who would govern from the center. That has not happened. So, those independent voters are getting "buyers remorse."
It is the belief of many Americans today that government is spending us into a hole it could take generations to get out of. And that, Zakur may mean fewer jobs, and less opportunity for whom you have called here "your people". Nations such as China have already noticed. And even they are questioning our government's spending habits these days, and they are right!
No one was paid to attend the Tea Parties and I claim every dollar I make on my tax returns. I have never been paid one red cent by any political group. - Paid to attend - I think not!People did not have to be paid to attend - and who cares if the president is back, or orange, or pink, or any other color. People are tired of being ignored. FYI - I will be paying - not paid - to go to DC this coming weekend. When you truly believe in a cause, no one needs to pay you!
- paid offI wonder how much the Republican Party paid everyone to show up. For that matter how much did they pay you to write this "glowing" entry about a bunch of sore losers who can't accept the fact we've got a black president?
- Voice of America EventThis event was attended by 18,000 Americans. Republicans, Democrats and Independants were represented. These people were there to show their displeasure with government excess in many categories. Our Congress needs to wake up to the fact that Americans in general are not happy with what is going on in Washington and want our representatives to reflect the will of the majority of Americans not their own personal agendas.
