HOMEOWNER TIPS FOR FALL AND WINTER

PESTS

  • Mice will be trying to get inside as the evenings turn cold, check all doors & windows to be sure tight fit. Check the A/C lines, power, and cable lines as they enter the house, no gaps. Remove debris, vegetation, and other harborage items that mice could nest in by your foundation
  • Carpenter Ants are still active in the Fall. Watch for large black or brown ant traffic.Clean out gutters, repair any water drips or leaks around roof , chimney and gutter
  • Stinging Pests get very aggressive in the Fall. Hire a pro to take out any Hornets, Wasps, or Yellow Jacket nests before someone gets stung, or the pests ruin an outdoor gathering. Do not attempt to caulk shut any bees, wasps, or yellow jacket nests until late winter.

HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING

  • Clean your outdoor air conditioner unit after the leaves have fallen, to make sure a wet pile of debris does not spend the winter on or under your unit.
  • Have your furnace serviced before the first cold weather to beat the rush, and insure it is ready when you need it.
  • Change air filters, clear out the area around the furnace to insure good clean airflow.
  • Consider having your ducts cleaned to remove any contaminants and obstructions.
  • Consider adding more insulation to attic or other heat loss areas
  • Remove screens, install storm windows.
  • Assure tight fit for doors and windows to prevent heat loss.
  • Check the caulking around windows to be sure water & air are not penetrating structure.


MASTER-CARE FLOOR CARE

  • Have those area and oriental rugs cleaned and protected before the Fall & Winter traffic of muddy feet invade.
  • Traffic areas around entryways should be cleaned and protectant applied to extend the life of the flooring.
  • Sofas, chairs, and other upholstery that is subject to heavy use should be cleaned and protected from the rugged days ahead.

  • Outdoor spigots must be turned off from inside, and remove the handles
  • Remove outdoor hoses from reels, do not leave them attached all winter
  • Have your backflow prevention device winterized
  • During sub-zero weather, let water trickle through lines, be sure garage door is closed
  • Also leave cabinet door open so heat can get to waterlines under sinks
  • Insure crawl space vents are closed to prevent freezing of pipes.
  • Insure attic waterlines are insulated

  • Clean gutters of leaves to minimize chance of ice dams.
  • Check for branches that may overhang roof & trim to be sure heavy snowfall would not knock branches onto roof.
  • Repair/replace shingles with turned-up edges, winter winds will make them brittle & blow off
  • Be sure chimney cap is secure.
  • Check flashing to confirm no new cracks have developed.

  • Plan ahead for holiday lighting. Add outlets NOW before the cold weather hits.
  • Review exterior lighting fixtures & change bulbs.
  • Add lighting to new sidewalks,patios or paver areas to reduce trip risk.
